The twigs and gum of the tree are used both ceremonially and medicinally. The Agonis Flexuosa was used in this series of pictures to represent how it interacts with the different elements. First, water, then steam, fire, and ash. &nbsp;This represents the many ways the environment interacts with the tree and how the Noongar people used it in ceremony or medicine. Water is the starting point of all life, steam reflects the hot steamy climate of Australia. Then we have fire – the natural cycle that all Australian plants go through for rejuvenation. Finally, we have dust – the end of the cycle and the beginning of another. We all will turn to dust, however from dust there is life and thus, the cycle of water, steam, fire, and dust returns once again. This photo series was uploaded on a website for anyone to explore and interact with. The pictures are strung together to make an intricate story of life that was so important to many people and is yet ignored by history. Through turning this story into images, the aim is for a viewer to interact with each image and form a story in their mind with the understanding that this was a highly important ingredient in the lives of the Noongar people. It covers a series of different topics, both old and new, as well as sections for the users to write down their ideas and explore the topic discussed. It is also filled with my own work in order to provide inspiration. This was an incredibly important topic for me to tackle as this has been a huge issue for me and for many others I know, and this direction was something that I always wished that I had. Creating a simple book with two voices that someone can follow and get guidance from, pushed me to make an interactive book. The way that they are used to create huge amounts of stress beyond what one would experience in most lines of work to standardize intelligence. Exams have created many issues throughout education on a global level, and it is through looking into this issue and talking about the question of what makes exams so ineffective that hopefully change might occur. To properly investigate this issue and tease out the flaws of exams, a three-part exam paper targeting teachers and educators was created. The first tackles the issue of how exams are designed for a specific type of student to do well in. If one assumes that there are a multitude of learning styles such as visual, aural and tactile, exams only allow for very specific students to do well. To emulate the impossibility of exams for some students, a bland, heavily contrasting page filled with impossible-to-answer questions was created. The second paper is designed to give the teachers an example of what a better paper might consist of – giving students the ability to explore topics instead of needing to memorize quotes and write the same essay a thousand times. Here, it is not about standardization but instead about the student’s ability to break down and understand questions and create an interesting answer. The third and final paper takes studies and articles that are pro and against exams and asks the one interacting with the paper to read through them and write down what they think. Solution: The project’s direction came from an article which describes the mind of a spider and how spiders tend to store information in their webs. This means that a spider has two minds – the mind in its head and the mind in its web. By accessing these two minds, it can understand the world around it and using that concept, I looked at the spider’s web and connected it to the way humans use symbols to navigate places even if one has never been there before. An example of this is a toilet sign. Even if one is in a country they have never been to, with a different language, the symbol for a toilet is universal and we can connect information and actions to said symbols. I furthered this by tying logos and symbols together and created an experience where the audience expands their ‘web’, clicking on different elements to pull up articles connecting everything together. One of the big challenges of this project was to create a one-page website which was important when creating the web. The outcome is a highly interactive one-page website where one can go on a journey though the world of webs, symbols, and signs. The moving background which tracks one’s mouse is a key part of making this page feel alive and interesting, for everyone’s experience will be unique as they work their way through the spider’s web. The Rat King – Website https://evog0001.github.io/startrat.html The Brief: The design brief for the Rat King website revolved around creating a highly interactive website which is based on a strange/interesting Wikipedia page. The Solution: The Rat King is a strange phenomenon discussed on Wikipedia where a collection of rats somehow manages to get their tails tangled together and are unable to part. This collection of rats, against popular belief, somehow survive. They work as one large organism and interact with the world for years if the preserved Rat King corpses are to be believed. The Rat King is designed to take the viewer on a journey through a strange website where you don’t know what’s going on or where you are going. It is a surreal experience with hidden pages that have strangely placed links inside it. To traverse the Rat King is to experience a site where you can get caught up in loops as one tries to click around the page to find where to go next. It is a place where you need to zoom out and explore pages beyond what one might think they need to do to find the clue for the next stage. Through text art combined with links and strange imagery and messages, the Rat King is a fun exploration into a completely conceptual website that uses simple coding and tricks to create a deep and is a series of posters and cards that I completely reimagined and redesigned from the current VDF. The aim of this project was to take an existing brand and turn it into something completely different through design. So rather than focusing on the ‘young exciting hip dance’ direction that the current VDF prides itself on, instead I took the perspective of a conceptual and modern dance studio. To achieve this, I found beautiful images of dance groups and through gray scaling, cloudlike edits that are designed to emphasize the movements and poses in the dance, and a selection of muted yet impactful colours with a clean humanist typeface to go with them, a simple yet effective and highly conceptual work was created. I wish to acknowledge the people of the Kulin Nations; on whose land we are gathered today. I pay my respects to their Elders, past and present. With so much noise around the issue of racism, people often do not give experiences the chance to speak. These experiences are all real and from the heart. Each interview is as much a piece of the interviewee as the pictures and sometimes one needs to be calm and quiet to shout the loudest through the constant arguments and discourse that surrounds us 24/7. I am a western white person and this project aims to tackle subtle racism. Each person that is a part of this project has been shown every step that I have done and backed my work fully. In the aim of equality, each person has been given the ability to suggest changes and each opinion has been used to shape this project. Four people of different heritages, cultures and histories are a part of this project, and each of their lives have been influenced by their culture, heritage, and histories, whether positively or not, and each interview, story and word need to be taken seriously as insight into this turbulent issue. What is subtle racism? How does it affect people? How should we approach subtle racism? These and other countless questions are asked but never addressed, and those who try to are often shut down as their voices are not loud enough to be taken seriously even if they are the ones who gives the greatest insights. When the world shouts and butt heads, sometimes it takes the quiet speaking up to change the tides, and when they do, they need a way to speak to breathe through the walls put up by all involved in the debate. ‘If you don’t see the race, you don’t see the person’ is a project built around a series of interviews I did with different POC’s discussing their opinions of race and subtle racism. Through the project and interviews, topics were covered such as ‘woke allies’, what it means to be connected to one’s heritage and the importance of understanding culture when interacting with someone from a different background. These are &nbsp;some of the topics that were addressed during this project. The project consists of: Photographic images of the participants,&nbsp; interviews that are both in a short, edited form and 30+ minute forms and ‘Gift Cards’ that when one opens the card, audio taken from one of the interviews immediately starts playing. The aim is for everything to be presented in a gallery and then for each attendee to take a gift card. of Emptiness box is filled with a variety of different promotional items which are all based on the idea of emptiness. Firstly, the box itself is mostly empty and when one looks inside through the hole at the top of the box, all one can see is the emptiness within. The sheer white is designed to take all forms of visuals out and make the box feel like a blank slate. The business card is designed to be simple, clean, and focused on being open and empty. Futura was used as a typeface in order to make everything feel clean and open, and with its naturally wide kerning, there is plenty of empty space in between each letter and word. Then we have the letterhead with a simple and clean design to follow the empty motif. Finally, we have the eraser. The eraser has the logo printed on it and while following the previous design motifs, it is also the most important element of the box. I chose the Agonis Flexuosa plant as my focus, exploring the life cycle and cultural significance of this native Australian plant through my images. I chose audio, photography, and gift cards to distribute this message. ‘If you don’t see the race, you don’t see the person’ is a multimedia project which tackles a form of racism that one might not think about, especially within universities; subtle racism. The second part of this project was to create a multimedia experience that revolves around distributing one’s message effectively across one’s specific target audience. The statistics and commercial information was provided by the university and needed to be incorporated into the design. The deliverables were: the annual report and an envelope.
